Grid-tied systems

Grid-tied PV systems are largely installed by local companies/installers and are categorised in four types namely SSDG (< 50 kW), MSDG Category 1 (50 – 200 kW), MSDG Category 2 (200 kW – 2MW) and Utility (> 2 MW). An analysis of the number of SSDG, MSDG Category 1, MSDG Category 2 and Utility-based PV systems installed by each company was made. The conclusions for each type of Grid-tied PV systems are:

SSDG: Two (2) companies have installed between 1 – 10 of this type of Grid-tied PV system, two (2) between 11 – 50 and five (5) more than 100.

MSDG Category 1: Five (5) companies have installed between 1 – 10 of this type of Grid-tied PV system and the remaining four (4) have not yet installed MSDG Category 1 PV systems.

MSDG Category 2: Only (1) company have installed between 1 – 10 of this type of Grid-tied PV system.

Utility: Only (1) company have installed between 51 – 100 of this type of Grid-tied PV system.

As a summary, Fig 2. below show the percentage of each of the four mentioned categories of Grid-tied PV systems installed by PV companies in Mauritius.

An analysis of the total capacity of the different types of Grid-tied PV systems was made and the conclusions are:

SSDG: Three (3) companies have installed a total capacity of between 1 – 5 MW of this type of Grid-tied PV system and six (6) smaller than 250kW.

MSDG Category 1: One (1) company have installed a total capacity of between 0.25 – 0.5 MW of this type of Grid-tied PV system and four (4) < 250kW.

MSDG Category 2: One (1) company have installed a total capacity of between 0.25 – 0.5 MW of this type of Grid-tied PV system and one (1) < 250kW.

Utility: One (1) company have installed a total capacity of greater than 10MW MW of this type of Grid-tied PV system and two (2) < 250kW.

Fig 4. below represents the total capacity of Grid-tied PV systems under their specific categories and the number of local PV companies installing these systems capacities. The cost breakdown of Grid-tied PV systems composes of mainly five components/items namely Panels, Mounting structure, Power electronics equipment (Inverter, Controller etc.), Cables and protection and Design and project development. An analysis of the percentage share of components used in Grid-tied PV systems by each company was made. The conclusions for each type of component are:

Panels: Two (2) companies have a percentage share of between 15-20% in the cost breakdown of Grid-tied PV systems, four (4) between 20-25%, one (1) between 25-30%, one between 30-35% and one (1) between 35-40%.

Mounting structure: One (1) company has a percentage share of between 5-10% in the cost breakdown of Grid-tied PV systems, two (2) between 10-15%, three (3) between 15-20% and three (3) between 20-25%.

Power electronics equipment: One (1) company has a percentage share of between 15-20% in the cost breakdown of Grid-tied PV systems, five (5) between 20-25%, one (1) between 25-30% and two (2) between 30-35%.

Cables and protection: Two (2) company has a percentage share of between 5-10% in the cost breakdown of Grid-tied PV systems, five (5) between 10-15%, one (1) between 15-20%, and one (1) between 20-25%.

Design and project development: Five (5) company has a percentage share of between 5-10% in the cost breakdown of Grid-tied PV systems, two (2) between 10-15% and two (2) between 15-20%.

An analysis of the per kW cost (Rs) of the different types of Grid-tied PV systems installed by each company was made. The conclusions for each type of PV systems are:

SSDG: One (1) company has a per kW cost (Rs) of between MUR 25k – 50k for this type of Grid-tied PV system, six (6) between MUR 50k – 75k and one (1) between MUR 75k – 100k.

MSDG: Three (3) companies has a per kW cost (Rs) of between MUR 25k – 50k for this type of Grid-tied PV system, two (2) between MUR 50k – 75k and one (1) between MUR 75k – 100k.

Utility: Two (2) companies has a per kW cost (Rs) of between MUR 25k – 50k for this type of Grid-tied PV system, two (2) between MUR 50k – 75k and one (1) between MUR 75k – 100k.

The percentage share of the per kW cost (Rs) of SSDG, MSDG and Utility-based Grid-tied PV systems is 44%, 30% and 26% respectively.
